Jenna Ushkowitz is no stranger to theater work, which she sees as a bonus as the “Glee” concert tour nears its start.
In fact, the actress now known to loyal Gleeks as Tina worked on Broadway with current castmate Lea Michele in “Spring Awakening,” so they’re both ready for the performances being spun off from their hit Tuesday series on FOX. The live shows begin this Saturday (May 15) in Phoenix, then move on to Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
“We’re really excited,” Ushkowitz tells Zap2it. “We start tomorrow [Tuesday, May 11] in Phoenix on the stage, checking the set and getting the costumes. We’ve been running the show, and it’s coming together really, really nicely. I think people are in for a big treat. We’re having so much fun.”
Tunes that have been reborn as “Glee” standards, such as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and Queen’s “Somebody to Love,” are on the concert roster. As familiar as she’s become with them, Ushkowitz knows it’s one thing to stage them for television and anoather to perform them for live audiences — especially audiences that now have “Glee”-ful expectations.
“It’s definitely an adjustment,” Ushkowitz confirms. “In television, you have the luxury of having another take if you don’t get it right; in live theater, you just go with the flow and wing it, but you also work off the energy of the audience. That’s where I feel like I’m at home. In television, you also have a camera always in your face, but both (venues) are wonderful.”
With filming of the June 8 “Glee” season finale completed, Ushkowitz is happy the concerts are giving her extra time with her co-stars before they go their separate ways for the summer.
“You have Cory Monteith, who’s never performed live before, and he’ll ask Lea or me what’s the best way to do this or that. We help each other out as much as we can.”
Just as we predicted, Glee’s initially minor characters are gaining more air time as the season progresses. Jenna Ushkwoitz is pushing for producers to delve deeper into her black-clothes-obsessed character, Tina.
“I would love to see where Tina comes from because I’ve created my own backstory where she’s rebelling against her mother more than anything,” Jenna explains. “I don’t think her room is filled with dark posters and heavy metal stuff. I just think this is a phase she’s going through. There’s definitely a lot of options for all the characters to evolve and change next year. I’m totally rooting for Tina to join the Cheerios or something crazy like that!”
Glee stars Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale have revealed that their characters Tina and Artie will face “trials and tribulations”.
The duo made up during the recent Madonna episode after Artie (Kevin McHale) apologised for his misogynistic behaviour towards Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz).
McHale has now revealed that the relationship will be explored more during the 19th episode, directed by Joss Whedon.
“I will say that the Tina and Artie thing does not go untalked about,” he joked to Zap2it. “Stuff definitely gets talked about, and Neil Patrick Harris is in it, so it’s a big, fun, jam-packed episode.”
Meanwhile, Ushkowitz said: “They get to live out their relationship now. So you’ll see some really nice things from them, I think.”
She explained that the relationship will not be difficult but revealed that Tina and Artie will have to cope with problems in their individual lives.
“They definitely go through some hard times,” she said. “I think Tina essentially just wants Artie to be happy. And I know he’s going through a hard time with his disabilities so you’ll see some trials and tribulations, but nothing that will make or break them at this point.”
Glee continues Tuesdays at 9pm on Fox in the US and Mondays at 9pm on E4 in the UK.
If Glee can have an all-Madonna episode, it can certainly do the same with Britney Spears, right?
At least that’s what Spears’ manager, Adam Leber, thinks. He recently began a Twitter campaign for a Britney-themed episode of the hit singing television series. “Do you guys want to see a Britney Spears episode of GLEE?” Leber tweeted. “Thoughts?”
He’s even trying to land the idea on the list of top trending topics with “#BritneySpearsGLEE.”
We already know one star of the show who would love to bust out some Spears singles…
“I would so not be against a Britney episode,” Jenna Ushkowitz told us just days before Leber started his campaign. “I’m such a huge fan. It would be so much fun.”
In fact, Ushkowitz has been hoping for “…Baby One More Time” for quite some time. “Britney was my idol when I was growing up,” she told us during our very first chat with her mucho months ago. “I have been waiting for a Britney song. I would die.”
Kevin McHale thinks an all-Cher episode could work, too. “But Cher would be cool to have on the show,” he said. “She’s doing Burlesque. She’s so back in the game. She looks freakin’ awesome, so good.”
Until then, someone better get Chris Colfer some Cher CDs. “I know none of her music,” the 19-year-old admitted. “So it would be quite an education for me.”
Sorry for that bit of a hiatus – but now I’m back and so is Glee so everything should be good!
I’ve got a lot fo stuff to add, but for now here are 70 screencaptures from the Glee “Pilot”, 3 photos from the Twilight: New Moon Los Angeles premiere, 11 photos from the Glee Spring Premiere Outdoor Screening & 36 photos from FOX’s Glee Spring Soiree.
